The cello is often called the King of Strings, the instrument closest in nature to the human voice. Capable of soaring lyricism, powerful rhythmic drive, and outpourings of joy and sorrow, above all else, the cello sings. Cello!, a 90-minute program, features 12 of the most brilliant and expressive cellists on the scene today, as well as acclaimed international pianist Ilan Rechtman (Israel), and Emmy Award winning soprano Nancy Allen Lundy. Nardo Poy conducts in a program curated by Sato Moughalian, Artistic Director, Perspectives Ensemble. Featured soloists are Jerry Grossman, principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, soloists Wendy Sutter and Sophie Shao, and multiple award-winning cellist Andrey Tchekmazov. Also performing are Susannah Chapman (Principal Cello, Mostly Mozart Festival), Eric Jacobsen (Brooklyn Rider String Quartet), Pitnarry Shin (Lincoln Center Chamber Music Prize, Aron Zelkowicz (Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival), Wilhemina Smith, Kevin McFarland (JACK Quartet), and Caroline Stinson.
Cello! presents the gorgeous and rarely-heard luxury of a full orchestra of cellos performing Bachianas Brasileiras Nos. 5 & 1 of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Julius Klengel's Hymnus, and the light-hearted Die 12 in Bossa-Nova of Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann. Also featured are beloved works from the solo cello repertoire: Bach Cello Suite No. 1, Saint-Saëns' The Swan, Vocalise by Rachmaninoff, Victor Herbert's Canzonetta, Gaspar Cassado's Dance of the Green Devil.

Cello! is a tribute to Danièle Doctorow, cellist.

Reception in the piano museum following the concert.

The CELLO! concert is funded in part by the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation.
